TASK 3 : TYPE EXPLORATION & APPLICATION
In this task, we need to design a whole typeface consist of complete
uppercase and lowercase with numerals and some punctuations. After that,
we will need to create font presentation with the designed typeface and
font application showcase on how we use the font on mockups.
1. Proposal
Figure 1: Proposal
I proposed three ideas:
- Create a playful typeface for memes
- Create a Thai style typeface based on Thai font
- Nokia Cellphone FC Font
The first idea is to create a playful typeface for memes. I found out that
many memes online use Helvetica. The second idea is to create a Thai style
based on Thai font. It is fun to to blend the aesthetic elements of Thai fonts with the readability requirements of English.
The third idea is to expand the Nokia Cellphone FC Font.
2. Sketches
Firstly, I have a rough sketch of the typeface I wanted to create.

Then, I sketch it out again with grids and guides.

After that, I sketch the numbers and punctuation with grids and guides.

2. Digitalisation
After finishing the sketches, I started the digitalisation using Adobe
Illustrator. This process entails converting hand-drawn designs into
digital fonts. Each letter is carefully developed

3. Fontlab
After digitalising all the alphabets, numbers and punctuations,
I import all the digitalisation into FontLab and start generating in
Fontlab.

Mr. Vinod's lecture video demonstrates kerning in Fontlab. I also did
kerning.

4. Font Presentation
After completing all the process in Fontlab, I exported all the font
from Fontlab into the font book.

As my font's name is Joy, I use the colour of the Toysrus' logo. This
colour palette looks joy and lively.
I use the character, Joy in an animation comedy, Inside Out to match
my font style and font name.

5. Font Application
I continue doing the font application with these two mockups website:
As my designed typeface is fun and joyful, I came up with an idea of
applying my typeface on spreading joy. I created an April fools
memes, card deck of the emotion of joy, poster about spreading joy,
stands of the Inside Out 2 film poster and a set of Inside Out 2
booklet and CD. I used the film of Inside Out 2 as one of my theme
because "Joy" is one of the character in the film. Inside Out 2 is
an animated comedy which tells the story of emotions such as joy,
sadness, anger, fear and disgust.

FEEDBACK
Week 9:
Complete the proposal for task 3. Come up with 3 ideas and
write the reason of choosing the topic. Must try out with
sketches first. Show the sketch and wait for Mr.Vinod's
approval for the topic.
Week 10:
The topic of creating a fun looking typeface is approved by Mr.Vinod. Can
start the digitalisation in Adobe Illustrator. Start with
uppercase letters this week. Consistency is crucial.
Week 11:
Watch the Facebook post for punctuation before digitalise
them. Continue the lowercase letters and numbers.
Week 12:
Finish the numbers and punctuation by this week. Import all the
fonts into Fontlab. Watch Mr.Vinod's lecture video for Fontlab.
After finalising and generating in Fontlab, can start with font
presentations and font applications.
REFLECTION
Experience:
In Task 3, I created a typeface through research, sketching, and using
Illustrator and FontLab to digitize and refine my designs. Designing a
complete set of characters highlighted the importance of precision and
consistency. Crafting mockups allowed me to see the typeface in
different contexts, revealing its usability and visual appeal. This
experience balanced creativity with technical skill, demonstrating how
minor adjustments can significantly impact readability and design.
Overall, it enhanced my understanding of typography and my ability to
create functional and aesthetically pleasing fonts.
Observations:
noticed that attention to detail is crucial in crafting effective
typefaces. Small adjustments in spacing, weight, and alignment can
significantly influence both the appearance and readability of a font.
This experience highlighted the need to merge creative ideas with
technical skills. While tools like Illustrator and FontLab are
indispensable, a thorough grasp of typographic principles is also
essential. Consistency across characters is key to achieving a
cohesive look. Additionally, creating mockups proved valuable for
assessing how the typeface functions in various real-world scenarios,
ensuring both its practicality and visual appeal.
Findings:
The experience highlighted that crafting a successful font requires
careful attention to detail and thorough testing to resolve any
issues. Mastery of design software is essential for converting
sketches into digital fonts and making necessary adjustments.
