Task 2: Typographic Exploration and Communication

For task 2, we need to design a headline in Illustrator which is selected in the texts that given by Mr. Vinod. After designing the headline for 'bauhaus', I started creating layout using InDesign. The progress of task 2 took few weeks. I first sketched out my ideas for this task before using Illustrator and InDesign.

Figure 1.1 Research on Bauhaus

I study Bauhaus online and read articles about Bauhaus. I've learned that Bauhaus is simple yet interesting and elegant. Use shapes and colours to create new artworks and objects. Bauhaus is a school of art, design and architecture characterised by geometric design, respect for practical material. The intention for the new school is to show new respect for crafts and techniques in all artistic media.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 6:
General feedback: Complete the heading in Illustrator.
Specific feedback: Not a good layout. I need to design again for the heading.

WEEK 7:
General feedback: Complete Task 2. Update the feedback in Google Sheet.
Specific feedback: Adjust letter spacing and font size. Make sure the layout is neat.

REFLECTION

Experience:
I feel like task 2 is tougher and more challenging, compare with task 1. This task needs everything we learned in task 1 to create the final layout. I did some research before starting my sketch and watched YouTube videos about Bauhaus.

Observations:
I observed that doing research and sketching out my ideas are good habit in designing. I found that designing heading is fun. There are a lot of different ways and tools to digitalise ideas.

Findings:
I found that typography is not just designing words, we also learn kerning, letter spacing, selecting fonts matching the meaning of words, using grids to adjust texts. Typography is fun. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn!

Figure 5 Typography Design : Form and Communication

The primary purpose of a letterform is to convey a recognisable meaning to mind. Letterform must be designed with clarity, each being distinct within the alphabet. The most legible typefaces are those timeless  examples characterised by three qualities upon which legibility is dependent : contrast, simplicity, and proportion.

Typography texture and tone are affected by the spacing of letters, words, and lines. When the texture and the spatial intervals between typographic elements are consistent, the result is an easy readable text. Texture is also affected by qualities unique to the design of specific typefaces.
