PROJECT 1: PROPOSAL
05.02.2024 - 23.02.2024 (Week 1 - Week 3)

TASK BRIEF
The general theme of this task is "Cultural Sensitivity in Design". We are required to study a cultural phenomenon or a specific subculture which is observed as "sensitive", then "frame" our study within the chosen theme. This task aims to express cultural features in a way that improves viewers' understanding without modifying the actual facts. We need to use design language to express interpretation and produce preliminary ideas. Each idea must be supported by a short rationale.

We should discuss and finish the topic research and selection for proposal, proposal presentation and visual research by this task. Our topic research is Geisha Culture in Japan.

PROJECT 2: FIELD STUDY
26.02.2024 - 08.03.2024 (Week 4 - Week 5)

TASK BRIEF
In this task, we are required to collect data as our research material for the ideation in Project 1: Proposal. All collected data must be recorded, kept and documented and accompanied by necessary information such as type of artefact and materials, its purpose, symbolism, cultural and historical background.

Data Collection Method:

1. Online Research
  • For this research we decided to explore more on the Geisha beauty and their symbolic meanings behind their attire and makeup.
2. Interview
  • We have created 6 questions for the interview among Japanese citizens. This interview will be our base to collect our data and their knowledge of geisha culture.
3. Study Field Trip
  • Our group had visited the Geisha center in Kyoto,Japan. All of the data that was collected from the research trip will be included in our data collection analysis.

PROJECT 3: FINAL PROJECT & PORTFOLIO
11.03.2024 - 29.03.2024 (Week 6 - Week 7)

TASK BRIEF
For the final project, we decided to create a product design utilising the data collected from the research trip. After the group discussion, we started sketching our ideas of geisha makeup box with moodboards and rationale. Our final sketch idea is designed by Adriana. Our group members created the geisha makeup box manually.

Week 3: We started the research of Geisha Culture in Japan. The data collection method that we used in project 1 is online research. We finished the proposal presentation by this week. The proposal presentation was first recorded by Tan Sin Mi and me. Then, our group decided to add in more data of Geisha Culture on the last day of submission, so the final proposal presentation was recorded again by our group leader, Amirah and Adrianna.

FINAL OUTCOME

REFLECTION

In this module, I experienced a study field trip in Japan to explore a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. The process of learning and collecting data is really interesting. I realised that teamwork is really important in the field. This is my first time doing product design manually. I never thought about my group can finish this project so well. I was very satisfied with the outcome of the final project. Before starting the process of creating a cosmetic box, I tried to make a simple origami of my idea about cosmetic box with A4 papers. I was super happy after showing Ms.Anis the sample of my idea. She said my simple sample was impressive. Besides having fun in the making of the final project, I also enjoy researching geisha. Geisha culture is a historical and symbolic phenomenon in traditional Japanese culture. As a young generation of a country, we shouldn’t abandon our culture. Furthermore, I really appreciate the opportunity of learning and participating in this module. Experienced data collection by traveling overseas is very fun. I get to explore more about design. This trip definitely changed my attitude towards learning design.
