INSTRUCTIONS

TASK BRIEF

We are required to explore more about the selected artwork in this task. In Task 1, we learned design principles and listed down the design principles we observed in the design. We will study the design principles found in the selected design, as well as the size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG Goal in this task.

The chosen UNSDG Goal for my task is the fifth goal - Gender Equality. I found this goal interesting is because this goal aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. In this task, I will analyse the artwork and look more into the design principles in the artwork.

VISUAL ANALYSIS

Selected work of design/art:
Original Sin by Marikit Santiago, 2018, acrylic, oil, pyrography and pen, 148cmx218cm

Selected UNSDG Goal: 5. Gender Equality

Phase 1: Observation

This design is in landscape format. There are naked pregnant women in the centre. They are painted oppositely. Almost half of the women's bodies are painted in blue and white which looks like a highlight effect. There are banana leaves on both sides of the naked women. At the bottom left, a young girl's hand is on top of a goat. There are two cuddling naked lovebirds painted at the top left. They have different races and skin colours. At the bottom right, a toddler is sitting beside the lamb. The background of the design is abstract painting. As for visual elements, the main colours observed are brown, green and blue. Overall, it is similar in colours. The artist draws actual objects in this design. The border is created by used cardboard.

Phase 2: Analysis

This design is approximate symmetry as the elements on either side of the design are similar, but are not mirror images of one another. The emphasis is on the central object, two naked pregnant women. They are painted in a bigger size compared with other objects around them to create focus, which also makes the design have proportion. The objects at the corners are much smaller. It has similarity in colours and size of objects which are painted on the corners of the design. There is harmony in the overall composition as every element of the design creates the same theme which is gender equality.

Phase 3: Interpretation

This artwork is a photo of painting that portrays Marikit Santiago depicting herself as pregnant and nude, with one child in utero and two more by her side. Santiago is pragmatic about her public appearance as a mother. She believes in creating authentic art, even if it means confronting forbidden issues or painting subjects that people may be uncomfortable with in the art world. She is most comfortable expressing personal art, and motherhood is an important element of her current life and art.

I observed that this artwork by Santiago brings out a theme of gender equality as she emphasised motherhood in her design. Her design style speaks out her inner words of being a mother. Public underestimates the power of women. Support for pregnant women, new mothers and the lack of women in leadership roles are in the top 10 equality issues faced by women.
